NEWPORT NEWS—Newport News police are warning residents after a recent spike in reported scams involving prepaid money cards.
In many cases, someone calls claiming to be a representative from a utility company, like Dominion Virginia Power or Verizon. The caller says that a bill is overdue, and to avoid shutoff, the customer has to pay with a prepaid card. Naming this as the only acceptable method of payment is the red flag said officers with the department’s economic crimes unit.
