A man was killed when he crashed into a tree off an Interstate 64 exit during a car chase with police early Sunday.
Sherman Brown, 25, of Norfolk, was driving east on I-64 at the I-64/Interstate 264 interchange shortly before 3:30 a.m. when a state trooper clocked him at over 100 mph, said Sgt. Michelle Anaya, a State Police spokeswoman.
Brown was pulled over, but sped off before the trooper could finish citing him for reckless driving, the news release said.
When he attempted to take the Indian River Road exit, Brown lost control, ran off the road and crashed into a tree, Anaya said. He died at the scene.
Brown was not wearing a seatbelt, Anaya said, and alcohol was not a factor.
About an hour earlier, state police were on the scene of crash at the Indian River Road exit on I-64 west. The driver fled the scene, but was later apprehended.
